Ginger is an aphrodisiac – warm pungent and spicy it intoxicates the blood, excites the senses and stimulates amour. The giving of Gingerbread as a love token goes back to medieval times when knights presented shield-shaped gingerbread to maidens before jousting competitions as a favour.
